Cats are generally solitary, easy-to-care for companions. Choosing the right cat toys, and loving attention will keep them happy, healthy and safe for a long life - in some cases a ripe old age of twenty!
Aside from the basic essentials, you'll also need a variety of accessories designed specifically for your feline friend in pet supplies stores or at online pet supplies outlets. Some of the more popular items include:
Cats instinctively bury their waste to hide it from predators. You can help your kitten learn to use a litter box early by putting kitty litter in a small pan on the floor or in a cut-down cardboard box to start with, then gradually move the pan into the litter box as the kitten grows big enough to jump into it.
Cats need to scratch! It is a natural trait used to mark territory and remove the outer layer of the claw. To avoid destruction of your furniture or other valued items, buy or make a scratching post that will satisfactorily substitute for a tree trunk - objects made with twine, rope, hemp, even a real fire log!
Even indoor cats should have a collar with identification tags in case they manage to slip outside and get lost. A special collar with an expandable portion is recommended so that if the collar becomes caught on something the cat can get loose.
